Who Wore it Better: Starcrossed by Josephine Angelini

tháng 5 07, 2015     Josephine Angelini, Starcrossed, Who Wore it Better     No comments

Who Wore it Better is an original meme I brought with me from Drugs Called Books. In it, instead of discussing fashion or cloths, we discuss book covers from different countries, and who has the best cover. The meme is co-hosted with the lovely Amanda and Stacie from Beautiful Bookish Butterflies and will be featured on her blog every other week, so check her out as well!

This week, Amanda chose the Starcrossed Trilogy by Josephine Angelini. I haven't read this series, but I know Amanda loves it so this one is going to be interesting. Who knows, it might just be the thing to make me read it!
#1: US / UK - This time, there are two number ones. Why? Because I think the US cover is the prettiest one of the lot, in terms of color and scenery and all that Jazz.
But I have a special appreciation toward the UK one because it's the only cover where there's a couple on the cover. Starcrossed is a reference to Starcrossed Lovers. And if I'm not mistaken, this book is exactly about that sort of a relationship. So it only makes sense a couple will be featured... and yet none of the publishers aside the UK went that way. Why? Having a female MC is not a good enough excuse in my opinion.

#2: Swedish - This is the second prettiest cover. The whipping of her hair adds movement to the cover that the other covers are lacking, and I love the little details like the sparkles (stars), and the heart necklace indicating this is a love story. Plus there is what appears to be the Zodiac in the background, which peaks my interest - why zodiacs? what does that have to do with the story?

#3: Portuguese - This one follows in the footsteps of it's america sister. It's less visually interesting, what with the dress and the background and the stones being basically the same color, and nothing clashes. It makes it look like a very serene story, which is the opposite of what "starcrossed" stories are, so... But it is pretty, not gonna lie.

#4: Swedish #2 - I don't really have much to say about this. Is it atrocious? No. Would I buy a book with this cover? No. It's boring. It's dull. It's not ugly or anything, but to me it misses the mark entirely of what an attractive cover is. (BTW - it makes me think of a greek legend, the way she is standing and the dress style).

#5: Greek - UGLY and too much exposure/air brush.

Who Wore it Better - The Final Empire by Brandon Sanderson (Vote!)

tháng 3 11, 2015     Brandon Sanderson, The Final Empire, vote, Who Wore it Better     No comments

This week we chose the ever popular Mistborn trilogy! I have to admit, I've never really looked at these books, and I have no idea what they're about--but boy, they've got some GREAT covers! This week I actually brought my favorites, so I actually love all of these! It was very hard to number them!

#1: UK - This one kind of took first place immediately. I absolutely adore it. I love the chalk drawing feel to it. I love the splash of color with the blue that makes me think of magic, and fog. Which all is in line of with the synopsis - Ash falls from the sky, fog... Plus, I love how clean this cover is!

#2: Portuguese -  So, I love the illustration of #3, but I simply adore the colors of this cover. It's so vibrant while still being dark and mysterious. I love the quiet city scene, with the lone girl and her tattered cloak. It could easily be a poster on my wall!

#3: US: Okay, so this is illustration is just so perfect! I love how the girl seems to be almost a part of the background. Considering her post and weapons, she feels like an assassin, a warrior, a silent attacker, so that fits. She looks so fierce, and the drawing is just so beautiful. How can you not love this cover?!

#4: Dutch- Drawing wise, I like it less than the first three (though, that's mostly because of the face. I really don't like the face, and faces are kind of a big deal to me in drawn covers). But you can't deny the captivating swirl of the cloak's tatters, the danger, the way she's part of the rock... The darkness, and slight glow... yep. It's still super pretty, and very easy on the eye.

#5: US 2 -Okay, so, confession: I think this cover is really pretty, but it's the reason I haven't picked up the book. I mean, the drawing is real pretty. But I really don't like the colors. I feel like they swallow the girl, and not in a good way (like coer #3, or #4. There, it feels like she's deliberately part of the background. Here... swallowed is the key word). It's just not a cover that compels me to look at it for long.

#6: Romanian - I actually surprisingly like this cover. I like how it's the only one that doesn't have a face on it; but a mysterious hooded figure, that seems to be part of the fog. However, the typography (or whatever that is) is really bad in my opinion. It just doesn't really blend with the cover and takes over it completely, covering the picture like that. Plus, what's with that pink square on the side?...

Who Wore it Better: Delirium by Lauren Oliver (Vote!)

tháng 2 25, 2015     Delirium, Lauren Oliver, vote, Who Wore it Better     No comments

Who Wore it Better is an original meme I brought with me from Drugs Called Books. This week we're taking a look at Delirium by Lauren Oliver. Like last time's WWIB, I haven't read this one. At this point, I'm not sure if I ever will, and the covers are a big part of that.
Don't forget to VOTE for your favorite cover!

#1: UK - YES. This is what I'm talking about. This cover is pretty like a picture. It's tranquil colors make me think of love and softness. But the girl is actually standing alone, unlike a lot of similar cover (which usually feature a couple), which is interesting. It's beautiful, but she's shadowed. And the picturesqueness makes one think this beauty might not be real. And yes, I might be reading too much into it because I want it to fit the synopsis it's so pretty...

#2: French -  So, actually, this one has many variation, some of them in English, but I chose the one with the background I liked best - the black. It makes the beautiful woman stand out against the letters, but also gives a sense of darkness (through the black background). But the strength of this covers lies in the typography. The swirling extensions as well as the fat letters gives to me the impression of a heart together with the face. It's beautiful, and appropriate.

#3: Indonesian: In the case of this cover, I'm going to look at it just as a cover. Because if I'd look at it in relations to what the story is about, I will have to put it way lower and admit that it looks more like a Japanese Magical Samurai Action movie (I get a Kill Bill vibe...), but I like it visually. I like the colors, the liveliness of it. How active it is.

#4: German - So... like... this scares me. (But I still don't hate it as much as the other two...)

#5: US - I hate this cover. Seriously, it's the reason why this book is still standing on my shelves, unread. It just looks so... bad! I hate the cut of the face. And I don't think the face itself is too appealing. Than there is the fact that it looks like the plants are her hair. Does she have hair? She appears bald. And, this cover doesn't coincide with the synopsis, at all. I don't feel anything like love/disease/dystopia.

#6: Dutch - Yeeeeeah. No. There is nothing even remotely appealing about this cover to me. It's a jumping girl photoshopped on a purple background...

Who Wore it Better: Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Mass

tháng 2 14, 2015     Sarah J. Mass, Throne of Glass, Who Wore it Better     No comments

This week we're taking a look at Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas. I haven't read this one yet, but anybody who's anybody has and it's high on my list. I'm surprised by how few covers this book has (so far). I've actually brought you all (but one) the covers available on GR, and yes - it's only six! Shocking.
Unlike normally, I'm burrowing Amada's style and ranking them rather than just listing them in natural order.
#1 - UK/US - So, yeah. Technically, these are two different covers. But they are the exact same image, one with a light background and the other with a dark background. And I have a hard time deciding between the two. It's handsdown the best cover for this book, but one plays on the darkness I assume the book deals with (assassins!) and the other gives Celaena this frigid, cold, icy dominor which I also assume an assassin will have to master to do her job well.

#2: Dutch -  In terms of photoshop technique, #3 is probably better done. But I was completely won over by the colors of this cover, and Celaena looks so badass. She looks like an assassin, coming to avenge.. something.

#3: Original English hardcover: I was really conflicted on where to number this cover. Aesthetically, it's really pretty. I'm not ashamed to admit that's what initially attracted me to the book, before I realized it was way popular. But... it doesn't really have much, does it? She doesn't look like a kickass assassin, blade strapped to her arm or not. It all looks a little too serene.

#4: German - I pretty much hate this cover. Celaena kind of looks like a dude. There's nothing in it, for me. Most of the cover is just so darn boring, and the illustration is not even half good enough to make up for that.

#5: Romanian - This one is pretty bad, but not as bad as number 6. I think it's badly photoshopped. The face looks way off, and I think of the Ice Queen a lot more than deadly assassin when I look at it. And faeries, I get a faeries vibe.

#6: Spanish - What... what is this cover supposed to be? Is there meant to be anything appealing about this grey thing on this completely black background? Is there supposed to be anything to make me want to read this book here? Because is so, the publishers need to get a clue. Pronto.

Who Wore it Better - Uglies by Scott Westerfeld

tháng 1 28, 2015     Chinese, English, Indonesian, Italian, Korean, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Scott Westerfeld, Serbian, Uglies, Who Wore it Better     No comments

This week we're taking a look at Uglies by Scott Westerfeld. I admit, this is one book I never considered reading because of the covers. And after looking at most of them, I realized this is one badly designed book! I'm going to do this in batches, because I kind of couldn't resist showing you most of them. I don't know, I guess I enjoy ranting to the point of being kind of sadistic about it.

THE FACES SECTION
English | Portuguese | Indonesian | Italian | Romanian | Serbian | Korean

So, it looks like most of the foreign covers decided to follow in the footsteps of the English cover. The Same English cover that is the sole reason I can't make myself read this book - that awkward cut of the face, the weird greenery that fells to me like it has absolutely nothing to do with the plot...
The Italian did a little better with the same photo, but still... why do we have a girl skulking in the bushes? It doesn't exactly matches the synopsis - which is all I have to go by, so if it does fit the book feel free to tell me!
The only covers here that seem to match the synopsis are the Korean and Romanian. The Korean because this is a pretty doll. Dolls are not real, same as the prettiness of the Pretty world. And it looks good, so all the better.
The Romanian because it shows a planned plastic surgery, which seems inline with the synopsis, even though I still don't really like it.
The rest are all creepy frontal images (with a guy thrown in there for good measure).
At least the Serbian adds a vibe of danger and whatnot to an otherwise really boring batch of covers.
I will be honest, though - I am biased because I'm kind of against just faces on covers. I don't think there's one I really liked (and I'm almost sure I've never liked a frontal face)

THE OTHER (Mostly English)
English | English 2 | English 3 | English 4 | Portuguese | Polish | Chinese

Okay, so this is more like it. I admit, the only one cover here I'm familiar with with is the English 3. I've never really liked it, same with the English cover in the Faces Section.
I'm really sad I haven't seen the English and English 2 around more. the English 1 is pretty unique and interesting. First, you have those "cut here" arrows, than there are the dolls body parts with no heads in a surgery tray. There is something really creepy about it despite the soothing blue background, and it really seems to fit with the synopsis.
The English 2 is just pretty cool. It gives movement and action to the cover - like an action movie poster. It makes the book look really interesting and engaging, unlike most of the other covers here and in the former batch which make it just look really boring.
The forth English cover is kind of bad. I would actually really like it if there wasn't that effing eye in the title. I mean, it's pretty cool - the E dripping like blood from a surgery knife, which is again inline of the synopsis. But the eye just ruins it for me.
Then come the foreign covers - Now, I know what you're thinking. The Portuguese cover is definitely a face, but it's also quite clearly other. I mean, it looks like a bad cover for a vampire story. NOTHING in it even remotely fits the synopsis! That is SO frustrating. Also, it's just plain bad.
The Chinese one is alright. It's also kind of a face, but the plastic surgery element is much stronger. Based on this cover alone, though, I'd think we're talking about someone changing their identity here, and not a place where people become artificially Pretty.
Then we're left with the Polish. I don't know what's going on here, but it sure is intriguing. I found myself staring at this cover a lot. It's kind of vibrant, with the colors (which none of the other covers make use of),  especially on the monochromatic background. Then there is the Shia LaBeauf brown paperback on her face, which also makes me think of an outcast, and she appears to be running. All in all, this is the type of cover that is definitely interesting.

My favorite? None. There is not one cover here that will make me actually buy the book, even though there are some interesting covers...

Who Wore it Better - Beautiful Creatures by by Kami Garcia & Margaret Stohl

tháng 1 14, 2015     Beautiful Creatures, Kami Garcia, Margaret Stohl, Who Wore it Better     No comments

This week, I brought you covers from some really cool places!
English – I absolutely love this cover. There's just something about it, you know? The grey on black, and then the huge, bold letters in purple. It looks haunting and dangerous. It looks like it might just swallow you into the void at the end of the lane. It's what really got me to read the book (though, it hasn't managed to get me to read the second book, yet).

Dutch – I kind of like this one, I guess? At first glance, it looks blank. But then you realize the're actually a girl among the darkness-or maybe she's a part of the darkness? That seems fitting to the story, all things considered.

Bulgarian - I definitely think there's something about this cover. A gate, in the woods. And beyond it, a girl you can't see clearly, almost like she's waiting for you. I would actually find this cover real pretty if not for the fact the top of the gate looks so unrelated to the rest of it. You can tell someone pasted it on the rest of it, and considering they managed to make everything else fit together, that kind of bites.

Indonesian - Wow. Indonesia, you rock. This cover is definitely a favorite for me, alongside the original. I love that the background is purple, and everything else has an inky feeling to it. The drawings are gorgeous, and I love how Ethan and Lena are on different branches of the tree. And also, that the branches look almost like living hair.

Slovak – If anybody has any idea what's going on in this cover, do share. The only think I do know is I wouldn't have bought Beautiful Creatures if this was the cover presented to me...

Serbian –  I would've loved this book... if the couple wasn't it in. Aside for looking pasted on, it took me a long while to realize it IS a couple. I thought she had a strange tumor at first, and then I was like oh, it's a head! Bad sign, right there. But if the couple wasn't there, it could've been gorgeous.

Italian - This looks like it might be a movie-tie in edition, but of the good kind. You know, the kind that actually looks pretty and doesn't plaster the actors in awkward poses all over it. That kind. I love the gate and the forest - though the cover is not exceptionally pretty or eye catching in any way.

Russian - So much wrong here. Couldn't they find a model that at least has DARK hair? I'm pretty sure Lena is dark haired. And why does this look like a NA cover, like the girl looks naked. And the city behind doesn't make me think small town at all. And they don't look like teenagers. And... you get the idea.

The weird thing about all these covers is that none of them will give you the impression the book is narrated by a boy.

My favorites are the original and the Indonesian one!

Who Wore it Better: City of Bones

tháng 12 31, 2014     Cassandra Clare, City of Bones, Who Wore it Better     No comments

Who Wore it Better is an original meme I brought with me from Drugs Called Books. In it, instead of discussing fashion or cloths, we discuss book covers from different countries, and who has the best cover. The meme is co-hosted with the lovely Amanda from The Book Badger and will be featured on her blog every other week, so check her out as well!

It's been a REALLY long time since we last did a Who Wore It Better Post! First I had boot camp, then settled into my life as a soldier... Well, we're back, and that's what's important! :) We're starting this time's WWIB with one of the most well love series on earth right now - the Mortal Instruments! God only knows how we haven't considered it before now...
(I weeded out the extremely ugly ones...)
English One – I really love this cover, always have. I love the colors, the composition, the guy and the city. I love the intricate patterns on the torso, only half visible. I think it's smart they went with depicting Jace - a hot, male chest is more likely to attract the girls than a woman's - even though this book is a lot more Clary's story than his. He would've had a more fitting place on the second/third book, but I can't argue with the reasoning. I also adore the fact it says the series name/number on it. I wish every series did that.

English Two – I've never seen this cover before. I rather reckon it didn't sale well, and that's the reason. This cover could've had potential, if they would've stuck to the illustrated feel of the city. But they didn't. Instead they pasted a face on it. That could've been alright... if they hadn't felt the need to draw on it with a pen. That seriously how it looks. No work was put into making the mark look real, or at the very least a part of the face. The result: yuck.

English Three - I like this one. I like the color, I like the double-city double-reality vibe. Or maybe more like underworld vibe? Like a city underneath our city... it works, especially with the plot taken into consideration. And boy, am I happy not to see any actor's face on it...

Chinese - This one looks like a movie poster. And it makes me think of mysteries and suspense novels, less of City of Bones. But it does look cool, I'll give it that.

German – I like this one. I like the color, the simplicity. I like that it has no model on it, no face. Just this ominous mark above it all.

Polish –  I don't really like this one. I don't like the dark background, I don't like the way they drew Jace (and really, Clary would've been a much more fitting character for the cover in this case), I don't like the font. I do think the artist is talented, but I wish he'd never given Jace a face.

All around... my favorite is the original one.

Who Wore it Better: Gone by Michael Grant

tháng 10 16, 2014     Gone, Michael Grant, Who Wore it Better     No comments

Who Wore it Better is an original meme I brought with me from Drugs Called Books. In it, instead of discussing fashion or cloths, we discuss book covers from different countries, and who has the best cover. The meme is co-hosted with the lovely Amanda from The Book Badger and will be featured on her blog every other week, so check her out as well!

So last week Amanda reviewed the different covers in Shadow Kiss, and this week we're starting a new series. This time... Gone series, by Michael Grant!
I confess: I haven't read the book. All my opinion are based on the synopsis and the prettiness of the cover (shallow alert!!)
I own Gone, but I have a huge fear of dystopias and I tend to take a long while to decide to read one. On the bright side, making this week's WWIB definitely made me want to pick it up, so maybe this will be the push I needed!

English One – Err... well, okay. Two teenagers looking blankly into... something. Yeah. This is... well, it's not the worst cover I ever seen, that's for sure. But it really gives nothing of the story, and it's not really the most attractive cover out there, is it? This cover is half the reason why I never read these books. Only half because now I own a much prettier looking cover, and yet I still haven't read it...

English Two – Now this is the one I own, and I really really like it. I'll also throw it out there that the pages are lined with yellow. Not trying to make you want to buy it at all ^-^ Anyways, I love the simplicity of it. I also love the void of the cover - from the summary of the book, and the title, you can tell some important... things, we'll call them, go missing. I feel like the cover emoides that, as well as the urgency and the danger using the running figure in the O.

English Three - Ohh, I really really like this one. I love it for all the reasons I loved English two, and I adore the face the O is literally gone! Like, how genius is that?! This is just such an ominous little cover ^0^

English Four - Once again, I like this cover! It definitely gives off ample vibe of danger. You can tell it's supernatural by the... well, power surge at the background. And you can also tell it's about teenagers, because the silhouettes are distinctively young. That's a lot to learn from one book cover!

Spanish – Hmm... what do I say about this one?... It makes the book appear to be a cheesy paranormal romance. And it gives the strong impression of a female protagonist, and I'm pretty sure this book is mostly from a male point of view. I suppose the part inside the bubble is alright. Sounds fitting. But it's really not the part that grabs your attention on this cover, is it?... (that honor goes to the photoshopped girl...)

Dutch – I actually like this one! It took the original image, shrouded it with some mystery, darkness, a sense of urgency and comradeship. And it emphasizes the void and separation by a large blotch of black in the middle!

Portuguese – This one is alright, I suppose. Nothing great or horrible about it. Very Middle Grade ish, though. Is this book middle grade?...

Swedish – No. Just... no.

All in all, I really like three of the English covers, and think the rest are kind of meh. In house won this round!

Who Wore it Better: Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead

tháng 10 02, 2014     Richelle Mead, Vampire Academy, Who Wore it Better     No comments

So after last week Amanda reviewed the different covers in Magic Study, we'll be starting a new series this week. So without father ado... Vampire Academy!
This series is probably one of the most well loved out there. It also has an unfortunate knack for shitty covers. See for yourselves - and I chose the best there were!

English One – well, this is probably the most well known cover of the series. It’s also the one I own. And I kind of think it’s butt ugly (it’s why I took ages to pick up these books). But I like it, just cause of the sentimental value, you know?... I mean, I hate faces on covers. And why did Angelina Jolie get cast as Rose, anyway? But whatever. It’s the content that matters. Though, I wouldn’t say I’m head over heels in love with the content, either… oh well.

English Two – this is the most recent cover redesign and… What. The. Fuck? Seriously? You redesigned the covers for this?! It has the exact same Angelina Jolie photo, only less opacity, the series name is WAY BIGGER than the title – which makes it hard to realize what is the title, and it’s mostly just this pink-red color. Worst redesign (almost) ever!

English Three – Well, hi there Mean Girls! Fancy seeing you here! Honestly, this one is bad too. It doesn’t bring any of the correct feelings for this book. There should be a vibe of danger, darkness, a bit of sexiness, action, friendship, etc… Yes, there is some vibe of Mean Girls in the book, but it’s hardly the main thing, is it? I would not pick up a book with this cover without a rec.

English Four – I love these covers. They’re so simple, yet perfect and beautiful. A Rose. Just a single Rose. And what’s our MC’s name? ROSE! And the background being blood red is also perfect. If I could’ve gotten these covers, I so would’ve.

Dutch cover – okay. Well, objectively, I suppose this cover is pretty. But what does it have to do with the book? Is her hair turning into butterflies? Or are those crows? What…

Turkish Cover – *coughcoughbuttshituglycoughcough*

Spanish cover – ohhh, me likey! It’s simple, yet perfect in a poetic sense – a rose covered in blood. And our main character is a Rose in a society of vampires. It fits! Plus, it gives the feeling of danger, hints at vampires, and appears quite dark. All in all, not bad at all!

Estonian Cover – again, objectively the cover is not bad. But it also feels like a poor representation of the story. Also, the model doesn’t feel like Rose (that’s not how a kickass Guardian would look like). Maybe it’s Lissa, but it feels strange that they’d put someone other than the MC on the cover of the first book…

Turkish 2 - Hello Photoshop! How have you been doing? Working your magic for Halloween, I see. That is indeed one creepy Barbie doll! I see someone broke her head and had trouble putting it back correctly. Oh well.
Clearly, I find this cover completely disturbing with the bad photoshop and hella ugly.

Vietnamese cover - Okay I kinda… like this one?! I like the fact the background is all dark, with a girl in the night. Gives the right vibe – creatures of the night and all that, a bit dark and dangerous. Then there is Rose. She may not be how I imagine Rose, but I love the contrast – Rose is alive, Rose is firey, Rose is volatile. I get that feel through the cover.

All in all, I really only like the forth English cover, and maybe the Spanish one...

Who Wore it Better: Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater

tháng 9 17, 2014     Maggie Stiefvater, Shiver, Who Wore it Better     No comments

Who Wore it Better is an original meme I brought with me from Drugs Called Books. In it, instead of discussing fashion or cloths, we discuss book covers from different countries, and who has the best cover. The meme is co-hosted with the lovely Amanda from The Book Badger and will be featured on her blog every other week, so check her out as well!

So after last week Amanda reviewed the different covers in Magic Study, we'll be starting a new series this week.
Drum rolls please...
It's... Shiver by Maggie Steifvater!
I haven't read Shiver. I started my Steifvater career with The Raven Boys, which I adore to pieces, and have been pretty much afraid to try Shiver because I've heard some bad stuff about the finale book, and Maggie herself stated she didn't know the full story when she started writing - she just made it up as she went. But I do want to read everything Maggie has ever written. So, I do plan to read this - and maybe this is just the nudge that I need!
Okay, guys, this is a first for me. I like all the covers here, so instead of separating into covers, I'm going to talk about them together like.
(Side note: I haven't read the books, so I don't know how which of these covers is actually more fitting to the story. My analysis is from the pov of someone who's thinking of reading the books)

I love the simplicity of the first English cover, and the soothing colors. I love the branches and the fact you can actually find a wolf in the background. It seems very fitting, both for the title of the book (Shiver, snow, you know) and the series itself. And indeed, this cover is so well fitting that most foreign covers follow it's example, which is why I didn't put them up. Too similar to the original to count.
Then we have the second English one, and the newest. It's a lot less subtle than the original - more bod and mysterious, more menacing. While I like the original better, I think this is a really good cover on it's own. One sure to intrigue and attract.
Then comes the German. It's my least favorite from the bunch - but I still really like it. I love the dreamlike quality the out-of-focused background combined with the color gives the story. I love the paper-figures in the middle - the girl and the wolf (which goes well with the trailer I saw for the book). I honestly think it's really pretty.
Then comes the Italian. Again, not as good as the original, but I still adore the simplicity. The black-gray background gives off the vibe of something dark and dangerous, the simple heart says "this is a love story..." and the claw marks tell us "...with an edge", also hinting at the supernatural beings we'll be dealing with.
Now we're reaching the French. I really kind of adore this one. It's just so pretty and simple and dark. It doesn't sugarcoat anything, if that makes sense. It makes me feel like I'm going to read a n intense, dangerous story. This cover is sure to attract me, personally, and will definitely be enough for me to pick the book from the shelf in a bookstore.
And finally, we have the Russian. If you think it's surprising I like this cover so much as I just ranted endlessly about models in the Poison Study WWIB, you'd be wrong. There is a vast different in my head between photographed models, and art. I love drawn covers. I want to frame and hang them on my walls. This cover is painted, and the art is just stunning. No idea how the girl actually compares to grace, and I couldn't care less, because it's just so damned beautiful.

There were, I'll admit, more "unique" covers than this - but I chose not to taint these beautiful covers by putting them in the company of the ugly ones. Call me shallow (because I totally am).

Who Wore it Better - Poison Study by Maria V. Snyder

tháng 9 03, 2014     Maria V. Snyder, Poison Study, Who Wore it Better     No comments

This Thursday, I'll be discussing different covers for Poison Study by Maria V. Snyder, one of my absolute favorite series ever. This book series is so good I can't even, and Maria (can I call you Maria?) announced she'll be continuing it! Que in excited squealing!
1. English - So... I don't actually have much to say about this one. I dunno, I suppose it's pretty (and I do like the fact she's going up a castle's staircase, as that's accurate for the book's setting), but there is nothing about it that catches my eye or make me interested in reading this book. And, shallow as I am, since this was the cover I saw everywhere, I put off reading this amazing series for so long just because of it. GuH how I hate myself now because of it.

2. English 2 - I don't actually know how I feel about it. Much like the first, I don't exactly hate it - but then there is nothing about it that I particularly like, or that catches my attention. (Plus, the model kind of creeps me out)

3. English 3  I'm noticing a trend here because once again, I haven't much to say. I like the color. Don't really like how the background is - it doesn't fit as smoothly as it could. I guess I like the book and the jars?... I don't know. This STILL doesn't make me want to read the book, same as covers one and two. Which is weird - three covers in, and none are really any "good" to me. I'm a hard sale, apparently.

4. Engish 4 - Aha! At last, one I like! This was the cover I finally got for myself when I decided to read this book. And I really like it, so that's good! I love simple covers. Covers with just one thing that captures your eye. I love the solid black background against the colorful rise of smoke (makes you think of poison, definitely!). And I love that there is small, almost unreadable writing embedded in it, that makes you want to take a closer look and decipher all their secrets. And, honestly - I love that there's no model. Like, I love that a lot.

5. English 5 - The last English cover (that I'm going to show). Geez, someone really couldn't make up their minds! This one is probably the worst of the lot. Whereas all the others hid some of the model's features, giving the reader some leeway, this one just forces you to see this girl as Yelena. This is not my Yelena! And what's up with the still life painting in the back?... like, that's supposed to give out the tension, the intercitiy, the mystery, the danger of the book? It's freaking called POISON Study. Poison! Poisons are exciting! For heaven's sake, they're not dull and faded!

6. French- This is actually okay! It's simple (which we established I like!) and shows an important object in the story (the butterfly) plus the smoke of the poison which I love so much in the forth cover. The only problem is that I don't like the background color - it blends too much with the rest of the cover - doesn't make it pop, and therefore makes this a pretty forgettable cover. Doesn't make you want to pull it off a shelf, you know?

7. Italian - The Italian cover copies from the forth English one, though it used it's own image for the wafting smoke (which I actually like), but the most notable thing about it - the changed name! For some reason, Poison Study is called Dark Moon in Italian. Why!?

I have originally planned on showing you guys two more covers - the Turkish one, and the Swedish one. But as I was making this, I realized both of these were so ugly I really didn't want to. They're not in the running for this Who Wore it Better post. Like, not at all.
After all this talking, I'll sum things up for you - the forth English one for the win, and I'm not really a big fan of any of the rest ;)

Who Wore it Better: Anna and the French Kiss

tháng 8 20, 2014     Anna and the French Kiss, meme, Stephanie Perkins, Who Wore it Better     No comments

This Thursday, I'll be discussing different covers for Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins, in celebration of Isla and the Happily Ever After finally releasing (I've been waiting for sooo long!!)
1. English - so this is the original and most well known cover for this book. It's also the reason it took me years to decide to read the book. I really don't like it. I don't like the colors, I don't like the composition, I don't like the models... It looks very childish (to me) and doesn't attract me at all. If it wasn't for winning a giveaway and this book being the prize, I probably would never have read the book, which is such a huge shame as I loved it.

2. English 2 - Probably my favorite of the bunch. It's a lot more mature looking, with the gradient composition and the focal point being the title, but it also gives off the cutesy, adorable vibe of the story with the color choice, the little heart and the serene scene of Paris in the background. If this was the cover out to begin with, I never would've put off reading the book.

3. French - I really like this cover. I like the colors, I like we don't really see Anna, but we do see the bag that shows she's not from around. I like that she's standing on the solid purple background and not on the French scenery, looking at it from afar, as a stranger to the city would. I think whoever designed this cover did a really good job!

4.German - If you asked me "yay" or "nay", then Nay, but kudos to the designers for coming up with something new, interesting and cutesy to say "Paris" and "Love" without showing the Eiffel Tower!

5. German 2 - This one pretty much tried to copy the idea of the original, and if not for the fact everything looks so photoshoped and her legs look cut off, it could be cute. But all those exist, so... nope.

6. Indonesian- I really really like this one. It's simple and cute and there's not much else to say about it.
After all this talking, I'll sum things up for you - the second English cover is my fave. Then come the French and Indonesian.

Who Wore it Better - Alanna: The First Adventure

tháng 8 06, 2014     Alanna: the First Adventure, Tamora Pierce, Who Wore it Better     No comments

This Thursday, I'll be discussing different covers for Alanna: The First Adventure by Tamora Pierce. Alanna is a great example for a book that has had tons of different covers... for its English versions alone. I'll be showing you guys here my four top choices, along two of my favorite foreign covers, but there were plenty more to see.

1. English - so this is the cover I own, and I have a love-hate relationship with it. On the one hand, I LOVE how fierce she looks. I hated it at first sight, but when I look closer, I fell in love with her expression. But, I HATE all the dead space. Black background framing a drawn picture in a no-no for me. Seriously, was it THAT difficult to make the picture alone the cover?...

2. English 2 - so, this was my only other option when I decided to buy Alanna, and at first I planned on getting it. But then I looked closer and realize that as cool as it looks from afar it's... kind of misshapen. Something about the girl looks all wrong. Her face, her poster, her hands... something's not working, and I'm really particular on stuff like that. So, points down for that, points up for cool background lol.

3. English 3 - So, I actually really like this cover, comic book-ish as it feels (to me). I love the background and how Alanna looks, and I love that it shows someone else but Alanna. I mean, yes - Alanna is the MC, but there are more than Alanna in the story.

4. English 4 - I decided to show you guys this cover (even though I'd never get it for myself), because of the "adult" factor. This cover was obviously made to attract "grown-ups". Those that illustrated covers won't appeal to. It looks mature and serious, a single object that looks very realistic on a solid background. Not my favorite (maybe if it wasn't that shade of blue, I'd feel differently), but I like the thought behind it.

5. Danish - I am in love with this cover, with all that I am. Just look at it! It has everything. It has Alanna, in her guy disguise, standing in front of a ominous, shadowy structure, ready for action. Mysterious, and captivating. Then we have Alanna, the girl she is, above, looking feminine and fragile. But this Alanna, she's almost part of the background. Because "girl" Alanna is always hiding, always pretending she's not a girl. It's got everything - the two sides of Alanna, the fight, the mystery.... I wish THIS was the English cover!

6. French - so, I don't have much to say about this. It looks pretty cool, but it doesn't make me want to buy the book, either. It was one of the better foreign ones, though.
After all this talking, I'll sum things up for you - Danish is my absolute favorite. The rest are kind of... well, tied. I don't love any of them, nor do I hate them...
